Choosing a career in tech can be overwhelming. With so many roles to choose from, it's important to find a path that suits your skills and interests. In this newsletter, we break down how to do that.
How to Find the Right Fit
Pick a path that matches your interest: Work is enjoyable when you work in a role or industry you’re genuinely interested in. So think about your interests and passions. Do you love solving puzzles or coming up with creative solutions? Are you more interested in storytelling or visual design? Whatever it is, use your interests to guide you towards a role where you can thrive.
Research: Find out the requirements for each role by reading or asking professionals in those paths. Take a close look at job descriptions and day-to-day responsibilities. This will also help you identify which skills you'll need to be successful in each role.
Talk to professionals: It's always helpful to get advice from someone who has been there before. Reach out to professionals in the field to learn what it's like in their fields. They can offer guidance about the role, and what you need to do to get started.
Take online courses: Online courses are a great option for gaining knowledge in different tech roles. They give you a chance to develop the skills you need to succeed.
Consider the job market demand: While some roles might be in high demand now, this might change in the future. Choose a role that aligns with your skills and interests and has long-term career prospects.
These are common tech roles you can explore and skills you need to excel in them:
Product Manager: They’re responsible for overseeing the entire product development lifecycle from ideation to launch. They ensure that the product meets the needs of customers and stakeholders. Product managers need a combination of technical, business, and soft skills.
Software Developer: They’re in charge of designing, building, and maintaining software applications. It's a creative and collaborative role that needs both technical and interpersonal skills to succeed.
Data Analyst: They collect and analyse large amounts of data to help companies make informed decisions. It takes analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as a solid understanding of statistics and data visualisation.
User experience (UX) Designer: They’re in charge of creating the overall experience of a product or service. It's a job that needs a deep understanding of human behaviour and great communication and collaboration skills.
Regardless of the role you choose, the tech industry is a dynamic and exciting field with countless opportunities for growth and development. There has never been a better time to be in tech.
