Before 2021, Zoe Motunrayo Ajiboye was an overworked social media manager earning ₦50k a month. Now she’s a product marketing manager who has worked with tech companies like Selar and Dropper. She talks about her tech transition and shares tips for aspiring product marketers.
What’s your current role in tech and how long have you been in it?
I’m a product marketing manager, and I have held this role since March 2021.
What were you doing before you transitioned to tech?
I was the social media manager for a traditional company, earning ₦50k a month.
What made you decide to transition into tech?
I juggled different roles at the company I previously worked for. I worked as a graphics designer, communications manager and social media manager without getting appreciated for my efforts. I wanted more money and growth.
A friend gave me a book on product management, and I learned about product marketing while reading it. It looked like something I was already familiar with, so I did some more research — I watched videos, read articles and took courses.
I also put out a tweet expressing my desire to work in tech, and Selar reached out to me. I started out as a product marketing intern and then got promoted to associate product marketing manager before moving to Dropper.
What was the transition process like and what factors helped you ease into your new role?
Unlike my work as a social media manager, which could be spaced out, the work rate at Selar was faster and more intense. For instance, I had to start creating long-form content after being used to writing mostly short-form.
It was initially overwhelming, but the job got easier as I joined communities and asked lots of questions. I was lucky to begin my career in a company that gave me room to learn. I had a great manager and received lots of positive feedback. My friends also supported me with useful books.
What skill crossed over from your previous role to product marketing?
Content creation.
What new skills did you have to learn?
Brand marketing, strategy, sales, market research and analytics.
What would you say is peculiar to working in tech?
The culture: tech is fast-paced and typically has a youthful workforce. Also, the organisational structure in tech encourages growth. My tech employers paid for my courses and gave me access to career growth opportunities.
What advice would you give someone looking to transition into tech?
Be open to making mistakes and accepting them. Don't just talk about transitioning into tech, take action. Join communities so you don’t go through the difficult transition process alone.
Take courses, but don’t spend too much time on them. Rather, work on real-time projects to improve your skills. In addition, take the risk of applying for jobs and shooting your shots at recruiters. The worst response you can get is ‘’No.”
Any tips for securing the right tech job when you transition?
Carry out extensive research on companies that fit your career goals. Join communities and be intentional about networking. It is easier to get jobs from referrals than go through a long recruitment process.
You should also take courses and gain the necessary certifications so prospective employers see that you’re serious about learning and personal development.
love this!
